The Battle of Midway, which took place from June 3 to June 6, 1942, was a significant naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II1. The U.S. Pacific Fleet, although outnumbered, succeeded in destroying four Japanese aircraft carriers while losing only one of its own, the Yorktown. The battle was fought almost entirely with aircraft1. The U.S. Navy’s decisive victory and its successful defense of the major base located at Midway Island effectively turned the tide of World War II in the Pacific.
