The “Final Solution” was a code name for the Nazi plan for the genocide of Jews during World War II1. This policy of deliberate and systematic genocide started across German-occupied Europe and was formulated in procedural and geopolitical terms by Nazi leadership in January 1942 at the Wannsee Conference held near Berlin. The plan was implemented from 1941 to 1945 and resulted in the systematic murder of 6 million Jews across 21 countries. It was the culmination of a state-sponsored campaign against Jewish citizens in German territory that began shortly after Adolf Hitler became chancellor on January 30, 19332. The mass murders started with the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. The “Final Solution” marked a horrific chapter in human history, reflecting the extreme ideologies and actions of the Nazi regime. As candian soldiers pushed farther they found the bodies of thousands.
