Kingdom of Castile (1065 – 1230) (jan 1, 1065 – sep 23, 1230)

Description:

1065 – 1230 AD: The Kingdom of Castile emerged as an autonomous political entity and medieval kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula, originating from the 9th-century vassal county of León, an eastern frontier lordship of the Kingdom of Asturias. Its name derived from the area's many castles. During the 10th century, Castilian counts increased autonomy until 1065 when Castile separated from León to become a kingdom in its own right, though it rejoined León from 1072 to 1157, with the union becoming permanent after 1230. Throughout this period, the Crown of Castile, encompassing the territories of Castile and León as well as southern conquests from Islamic principalities, projected power through the Iberian Peninsula. The Castilian kings made extensive conquests in southern Iberia, expanding the territory known as the Crown of Castile which came to include the kingdoms' overseas acquisitions as well as the once-separate entities.
