Christopher Columbus and the “Discovery” of America (1492-1504) (oct 12, 1492 – nov 7, 1504)

Description:

1492-1504 AD: Christopher Columbus, financed and authorized by the Catholic Monarchs through the Capitulations of Santa Fe, embarked on voyages westward that led to the European colonization of the Americas. His first expedition in 1492 landed in the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola. Although subjects of both Castile and Aragon participated in the discovery and colonization, the newly found lands were formally annexed to the Crown of Castile, as Queen Isabella had provided the primary support. Columbus' voyages and the subsequent conquests generated an immense influx of wealth into the newly unified Spain, propelling it to become the major European power from the late 15th to the mid-17th century and the largest empire until 1810.
