Apollo 11 (jul 16, 1969 – jul 24, 1969)

Description:

These days mark one of the most influential and famous events of the Space Age: the Apollo 11 moon landing with Niel Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Just eight years prior to this, President John F. Kennedy had promised to send people to the moon before the end of the 1960s, which prompted NASA to start working quickly on a spacecraft that would be able to complete the mission and bring its astronauts back to Earth afterwards. While prior tests with other Apollo lunar modules had been performed, none of them touched the surface of the moon as Apollo 11 did, and, because the moon landing was televised, it was broadcast to a wide audience. The Apollo 11 moon landing made the field of planetary science official, and inspired NASA and other space corporations to make more satellites and spacecraft to travel farther out into the solar system.
