Description:
Thomas McEvilley (July 13, 1939 – March 2, 2013) was an American art critic, poet, novelist, and scholar.
McEvilley was the author of magiciens de la Terre. magiciens de la Terre was an Art exhibition, contemporary art in 1989 and the first international exhibition with many artist from all over the world.
There was a lot of critique towards the show for example:
- There was more domination from the west than from other places, as if as the origin of art came from the west
- Signs of residual colonial attitude (remaining) also in the title referring to primitivist and irrelevant of the paradise of exhibiting artist
- Works were curated as most intellectual, they were western and more crafty by non western
- The show could not be seen without context which was given (primitive show)
- Bad curation
