Sigmund Freud (may 6, 1856 – sep 23, 1939)

Description:

Sigmund Freud (6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.

According to Freud the unconsciousness is the region of the mind where the most important processes take place that are the cause of most behaviour. The unconsciousness part is like an iceberg, hidden for the conscious mind. ‘It acts as a repository of primitive wishes and impulses kept at bay and mediated by the preconscious area’. Following Freuds theory on the unconsciousness, you can say that ‘the unconscious mind governs behaviour to a greater degree than people suspect’. The goal of Freud’s psychoanalysis is to make the unconscious conscious.

ID, EGO, and SUPER EGO are what Freud called ‘the psychic apparatus’, they are hypothetical conceptualizations of important mental functions. ID functions at an unconscious level according to pleasure and gratification, derived from satisfying basic instincts. This is divided into two drives; Eros (Life instinct) and Thanatos (Death instinct), These two drives are called EGO and SUPER EGO.
