Description:
The fleeing Goths found refuge in the northern mountains, where Roman authority had never been effectively established. The Kingdom of Asturias soon emerged as the first Christian political entity after the Umayyad conquest of the Visigothic kingdom, following the Battle of Guadalete. Founded by the Visigoth nobleman Don Pelayo, who was elected leader of the rebels and defeated an Umayyad army in the Battle of Covadonga (718 AD), this kingdom is considered the starting point of the Reconquista. It eventually evolved into the Kingdom of León, serving as the historical precursor to the later kingdoms of León, Castile, and Portugal.Added to timeline:
