Marshall Plan / Aid (jan 1, 1947 – jan 1, 1952)
Description:
• Aim: Reduce poverty, prevent the spread of Communism | Stalin claimed it was “Dollar Imperialism”. Paved way for Cominform in ’47 and Comecon in ‘49
• Truman sends George Marshall to see what could be done. He recommends $12bn in aid. Money was offered to all of Europe, but Stalin prohibited the east.
• Stalin wanted Germany weak, Truman wanted Germany to be strong.
• 16 countries received aid. ~$13.3bn
• By 1952 western Europe had recovered to pre-war levels of production, this was a good propaganda tool.
