Cuneiform Writing (jan 1, 3500 BC – jan 1, 3500 BC)
Description:
This is the year that the first form of writing, cuneiform, came about. This was developed by Sumerian scribes in Mesopotamia, and later refined in the city-state of Uruk. It was done by using a reed stylus to carve indentations into clay, and later stone, tablets. This was used for more than simply tracking transactions; it was also used to write about events that happened in the lives of ancient Mesopotamians. It provided a basic script that different cultures could write in, and paved the way for future writing practices.
