Description:
Thomas Durant briefly worked as an assistant professor of surgery before retiring from medicine and becoming a director of his uncle's grain exporting company: Durant, Lathrop and Company in New York City. There Durant worked with the prairie wheat trade and gained interest in the railroad industry and inland transportation.
Durant entered the industry as a broker for the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, where he became professionally acquainted with one of the company's founders, Henry Farnam.
