World War Two (jan 1, 1938 – aug 15, 1945)

Description:

As World War One drew to a close the treaties that Germany was forced to accept were quite harsh, leading to the rise of The Nazis (pronounced NOT-SEES), a group of fascist Germans bent on creating more room in the world for the “pure race”, or germans. Another goal of theirs was the extermination of many other groups of people, primarily the Jews. Adolf Hitler, the dictator of this party overtook Germany and soon took power as supreme ruler of the nation. In quick succession, Hitler would occupy Austria and annex Czechoslovakia. Hitler soon signed a nonaggression pact with powerful soviet leader Joseph Stalin. This meant that Germany would invade Poland from one side, and Russia from the other. Poland quickly fell, its territory divided between Germany and Russia. Poland's allies, Britain and France quickly declared war on Germany. At first, the war was fought on the water, and German submarines became a massive threat to British ships. By the time the spring of 1940 was over, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France had fallen to Germany, and Italy had allied with Germany. The German attention turned to England, and an amphibious attack dubbed “Operation Sea Lion” was set up. To make an invasion of the island possible, the British defenses had to be destroyed. This led to the Blitz, a period of heavy bombing of Britain that lasted for 7 months. The German Air Force was driven off the British Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain, postponing the launch of Operation Sea Lion. Nevertheless, British defenses were at their lowest, until the US massively supported them and their allies with the Lend-Lease Act. The US also halted exports to Japan, to undermine its empirical conquest in East Asia. Japan, seeing no other path, decided to destroy the US Pacific fleet to keep them from getting in the way of a huge invasion of the Asian mainland to get the resources necessary to support the exploding Japanese economy. This plan hinged on the utter demolition of the US Pacific fleet, stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This preemptive strike succeded mostly in destroying ships, but some survived. The American fleet quickly dominated the Pacific along with its allies, drawing closer to an invasion of Japan. Meanwhile, back in Europe Germany made the fatal mistake of attempting an invasion of Russia. Operation Barbarossa was launched, with Nazi troops pouring into the vast expanse of the soviet union. Not far from Moscow, they bombed the city of Stalingrad and then settled there for the winter. By the time spring came around the nazi army was tired, hungry, running low on ammunition, and surrounded. It didn't take long for them to be defeated along with the rest of the German forces. Meanwhile, in the east, American casualties were mounting with each Pacific island invaded and President Truman authorized the usage of nuclear weapons to avoid a full-scale invasion of Japan. Needless to say, two fission bombs, the most powerful weapons used in violence were detonated, destroying the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan quickly surrendered.
