Spanish-American war (feb 1, 1895 – dec 10, 1898)

Description:

In February 1895, the Spanish colony of Cuba began fighting a war for independence. Spain responded with much brutality, and the conflict became exceedingly bloody, much to the horror and outcry of the American public. Ethicality was not the only thing making US citizens want to intervene though, The United States had a lot of investment in Cuba, and the ongoing destruction hampered the return of those investments. Under much pressure from the populace, the government issued a promise of war if the bloody rebellion continued for too long. Soon riots broke out in Havana, and the USS Maine was sent to protect US citizens there but was hit with explosives, causing the United States to declare war. The war was almost completely fought at sea, and the US naval force completely outclassed Spain’s. Therefore, the war was completely one-sided. As the war came to a close, Spain ceded Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the US, and left Cuba to be a free country.
