American Revolution (oct 1, 1763 – sep 3, 1783)

Description:

The numerous taxes imposed upon the American colonies were highly protested, these acts of outcry often being violent. The parliament then sent the military to enforce taxes and other laws in Massachusetts, the most rebellious colony at the time. In a few years, the committees of correspondence would be established to coordinate action about British policies. In response, Britain passed acts with harsher conditions, such as letting English soldiers stay in people's homes. The Shot Heard ‘Round the World was fired in Lexington, marking the first battle of the Revolution. Britain then promises to free any slave who comes to their side, inciting a rush of slaves fleeing patriot territory. The Declaration of Independence was signed, and the war officially began since King George III of England would not let his American colonies go without a fight. A number of battles and a siege later, France joined the war and offered financial and military aid to the newly-fledged United States. In 1778, a man by the name of George Rogers Clark attacked and captured several British posts along with many French-speaking people he convinced to join his cause. Over the next year, victories and losses would go back to back for both forces, until September of 1781, when General Cornwallis was forced to surrender along with the British army in America. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris officially ended the American Revolutionary War.
