Treaty of versailles (jun 28, 1919 – jun 28, 1919)
Description:
Causes:
1. Germany lost World War One
2. The war cost an immense loss of life and destruction of property – the loss of infrastructure was mainly in countries other
than Germany
3. The Entente (the Allies) wanted revenge – particularly France who had seen the worst of the fighting
4. The Entente wanted to ensure that Germany could not wage war again and the Treaty was designed to do this by
attempting to take away their ability to do so
Effects:
1. Germany had to accept the guilt for starting the war
2. Germany’s army was limited to 100 000 men - all volunteers
3. Germany was not allowed armoured vehicles, submarines and aircraft. Many of the ones they had were required to be
scrapped
4. Navy was only permitted to 6 battleships
5. The Rhineland was demilitarised by the Entente and consequently Germany felt embarrassed by the fact that although the
area still belonged to Germany, they could not do what they wished in their own territory
6. The coal-rich Saar Region was taken from Germany and controlled by the League of Nations. All coal went to France – no
revenue for Germany
7. Germany was forced to pay war reparations of £6,600 million – which was finally discharged in October 2010
8. Germany lost it’s overseas colonies
9. Germany lost a lot of it’s territory in Europe including West Prussia
10. Danzig (formally belong to Germany) was controlled by the League of Nations so Poland could have access to the Black Sea.
It also meant that there was now a corridor between the main part of Germany and West Prussia called the Danzig Corridor
