Description:
The well-known Erie Canal was built between the Hudson River and Lake Erie, and was the first canal that connected waterways in the Western world. It inspired a canal boom, as well as canalside cities like Buffalo and Chicago, which would later become major industrial centers. The link includes a description of the settlements along the Erie Canal, especially Rochester, one of the cities that grew because of the canal.
