Turnpike and River Eras (jan 1, 1790 – jan 1, 1820)

Description:

The Turnpike and River Eras were the first major transportation eras of American History. We began to build roads connecting major towns/cities, such as the Philly-Lancaster Turnpike and the National Road connecting Illinois and Maryland. By 1821, we would have 4,000 miles of interconnected roads. Progress was also made in river transportation with the introduction of MS River steamboats in 1807. These early connections would foster later industrial growth through other modes of transportation as well.
