1. Changed the role of religion, questioned existing power structures
2. Stressed the importance of the Individual
3. Natural rights (people born with life, liberty, and property)
4. The social contract, people can over throw gov
5. Popular Sovereignty, power to rule belonged to the people.
6. Democracy (people vote and participate in gov)
7. Liberalism, protection of civil rights, free market economy, and protection of private property.
Enlightenment ideals encouraged voting.
