futurism (jan 1, 1910 – jan 1, 1920)

Description:

reminiscent of cubism, repetition, angle and direction were harnessed to highlight frantic movement, both physical and social. as the name implies, this movement looked to the future.

communication design (2nd image) -
cover of 'blast, july 1915' by wyndham lewis and friends.

this image was designed in 1915 for the arts and literary magazine 'blast' in britain. there were only two editions, and its final instalment, the one pictured below, shows the reason for the end of the magazine's life (world war i) as a way to inform their readers that this was the end for the publication.

the design was made using black ink with fountain pens on paper, then copied and reprinted.

world war i had been running for just over a year at the time this design was published, so the violence and misery of that time period is evident in the bleakness of the artwork.

the artistic techniques on the cover, such as cross-hatching and blackout blocks of ink, served as heavy inspiration for the later german expressionist movement, especially woodcut artworks like käthe kollwitz's 1921 work 'the volunteers' (3rd image).
