Reconstruction (jan 1, 1865 – jan 1, 1877)

Description:

In the aftermath of the American Civil War, the US remained to be near-totally dominated by the Republicans, with the exception of Democratic President Andrew Johnson. Radical Republicans initially took the reins of Reconstruction and focused on quickly expanding civil rights to African-Americans, but their frequent feuding with Johnson and later other Republicans made them increasingly unpopular. Reconstruction ultimately came to an end as the will to enforce it weakened amid Republican infighting.
