American Civil War (jan 1, 1861 – jan 1, 1865)
Description:
During the American Civil War, the Republicans dominated the US government, though they were by no means alone or even a unified force. Pro-Union Democrats participated in government as well as the anti-war Copperhead Democrats who favored peace with the Confederacy. The Republicans began to show factionalism as the Moderate Republicans emerged to advocate for a rebuilding plan that would allow the southern states to quickly rejoin the Union, whereas this plan was opposed by Radical Republicans who insisted that the south needed to be totally socially transformed before rejoining.
