Description:

Okinawa was the largest chain of islands in the south west of Japan. Taking this island would significantly benefit the US by providing aribase for the bombers to attack Japan .This then creates an advantage in the battle. This operation is called Operation Iceberg, an invasion of Okinawa and the other islands chained on okinawa. This started the battle of Okinawa on 26 March 1945. The battle lasted for months, the casualties for the US had 49000 and 12,500 men were killed or missing for Japan it was estimated about 110,000 men and 150 civilians were estimated killed in that battle. It was also known for having one of the worst kamikaze in a war.

It allowed the US to have an airbase to provide an airstrike to Japan providing an advantage similar to The battle of Iwo Jima because it was one of the chains of the island of Okinawa.
