Passage of series of discriminatory policies against LGBTQ+ veterans (jan 14, 1944 – jan 14, 1947)

Description:

1944-1947: The passage of a series of discriminatory policies implemented by the VA
regarding LGBTQ+ veterans returning from WWII. In 1944, the VA argued that any
discharge involving “moral turpitude” is considered dishonorable, which could be applied to homosexuality. In 1945, the VA explicitly targeted homosexuality and ruled that an undesirable discharge due to homosexuality was dishonorable. This barred veterans from being eligible for GI Bill benefits. In 1947, the “blue discharge” was replaced with the “general discharge” and classified veterans with homosexual tendencies to be
eligible for some benefits.
