Glasnost: allows people in the USSR to express their opinions
Examples: churches opened, books published, media could criticize government
Popular support --> FINALLY
Perostroika:
Economic Policy: to be efficient & productive
- allowed private ownership of businesses
- maintained some Communism
Democratization: open the political system & elect new lawmakers
- The Communist party no longer chose all candidates
Foreign Policy:
Hard to compete with US in costly arms race & Reagan went on TV and said the US is going to put laser beams in space to protect from nuclear missiles --> SDI
After Reagan-Gorbachev discussions:
- Gorbachev reduced nuclear missiles
- Gorbachev also ended occupation of Afghanistan
