After years of Shah's repressive rule, religious-based revolution occurs (Ayatollah Khomeini takes over and rules as a theocracy) and the Shah is overthrown + flees66 hostages (hostages were part of the US Embassy in Tehran) held for 444 days (led by Iranian student protest that turned violent) even though President Carter tried to rescue the hostages
