- West Germany rebuilding and becoming its own country

Makes Staliln upset --> he wants to make sure Germany is never strong again (but Marshall Plan is preventing that)

- Germany & Berlin split (Berlin is an island in Eastern Germany

- USSR cut off all entry to Berlin from the West
- Berlin was starved by communists due to the Marshall Plan

- Allies organized an airlift to send supplies to Western Berlin --> took 11 months, 2.3 million tons of supplies, 277685 flights)

FIRST Cold War Conflict

- Allies don't want to fight the Soviets so they fly in food and supplies

- Allies are helping Germany so they can fight the USSR and the Communists

- Stalin could have shot down planes but that would have caused another war & the USSR doesn't have the Atom bomb (nuclear weapons) at this point
