Berlin Blockade/Berlin Airlift (jun 12, 1948 – may 12, 1949)
Description:
- West Germany rebuilding and becoming its own country
Makes Staliln upset --> he wants to make sure Germany is never strong again (but Marshall Plan is preventing that)
- Germany & Berlin split (Berlin is an island in Eastern Germany
- USSR cut off all entry to Berlin from the West
- Berlin was starved by communists due to the Marshall Plan
- Allies organized an airlift to send supplies to Western Berlin --> took 11 months, 2.3 million tons of supplies, 277685 flights)
FIRST Cold War Conflict
- Allies don't want to fight the Soviets so they fly in food and supplies
- Allies are helping Germany so they can fight the USSR and the Communists
- Stalin could have shot down planes but that would have caused another war & the USSR doesn't have the Atom bomb (nuclear weapons) at this point
