Underground Railroad (maximum) (jan 1, 1850 – jan 1, 1860)
Description:
This was a network of people attempting to free black slaves, helping them reach the North and go into hiding. During this particular time, Harriet Tubman was helping out, when the effort had reached its peak. There are no exact dates as to when the Underground Railroad operated. (History.com 2009)
Citizens were affected partly by the actual impact of slave owners searching their properties, but more predominantly, the fear that pervaded the community surrounding the Underground Railroad of being caught and the hostility and vigilance of non-supporting individuals who didn't want to be criminalized were more affluent in the livelihood of people.
