Description:
ECONOMY:
- baby boom
- increased desire for suburbs
- growing middle class
- Immigration to Sunbelt states (highways made it easier to travel from suburbs to rural area)
- Levittown was created (cheaper and mass production of suburban homes)
BUT - shift of politcal power from northeast and midwest to south and west as taxes for defense spending shifted to sunbelt states
CULTURE:
- normal to conform
- no one wanted to be outted as a communism (McCarthyism)
- television provided platform for mass culture consumption
- advertising industry grew rapidely as 1950s was stable and prosperous. But soon offered more than ppl could afford => credit cards
Beatniks were poets who rebelled against social norms through poetry
