Purges of the Red Army (oct 1, 1940 – feb 1, 1942)
Description:
The purge of the Red Army resulted in a number of generals being expelled from the party and executed. This mainly affected higher-ups, especially in the Navy. This removed nearly 8% of the armed forces, and led to the German invasion of the USSR (as Hitler believed that the purge would make the forces incapable of resisting).
