The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment (jan 1, 1932 – jan 1, 1972)

Description:

In 1932, 600 African American men enrolled in the Tuskegee experiment in Macon Country, Alabama, which aimed to study the full progression of syphilis since there was no cure for this disease. The participants were recruited with the promise of free medical care. Although penicilin became the recommended treatment in 1947, the men were only medicated with placebo irrespective of the diseases´ effects such as blindness, mental impairment and death. In 1972, the project was shut down due to public outrage. The results were devastating: 28 persihed from syphilis, 100 passed away from related complications, 40 spouses were infected passing it to 19 children.
