Soviet–Afghan War (dec 30, 1978 – jun 16, 1989)

Description:

The Soviet Union intervened in Afghanistan to support the communist government, which faced opposition from the Mujahideen, who opposed the government's modernization efforts and Soviet influence.


The PDPA formed. The US support to the Mujahideen was part of a broader strategy to contain Soviet expansionism.


The conflict resulted in significant casualties on both sides, as well as extensive damage to infrastructure and widespread displacement of civilians. The war lead to further instability and paving the way for the rise of the Taliban in the 1990s.

Sometimes referred to the 'Soviets Vietnam war'.
