Reconstruction was the period following the American Civil War, from 1865 to 1877, during which the United States attempted to reintegrate the Southern states that had seceded and to redefine the legal and social status of African Americans. Efforts during this era included amendments to the U.S. Constitution (the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments) that abolished slavery, extended civil rights, and granted voting rights regardless of race, but were met with significant resistance and ultimately led to varied success.
