Beginning in 1896, the medical doctor from Vienna embarked on research that focused on psychological rather than physiological explanations of mental disorders. Through his clinical observations of patients, Freud identified a conflict between conscious and subconscious mental processes that lay at the root of neurotic (mentally unbalanced) behavior
