Wartime Reconstruction, Presidential Reconstruction, and Radical or Congressional Reconstruction:
Change in the balance of power bw congress and presidency
Reorder race relations in south-> temporary success
Plans:
- Lincoln: make them pledge unity and abolish slavery, then join
- Johnson: similar ideas but more punishment
vs.
- Radical Rep: Revenge, concern for freedmen, African American vote
Civil War Amendments:
- 13: Slavery illegal
- 14: African American = citizen
- 15: Voting and Equal protection for ALL citizens
Education:
- Freedmans Bureau: offered education to black ppl and poor white ppl
- Growth of black universities

Ultimately a Failure:
- Coercive share cropping
- KKK
