Taisho and Early Showa Period (jul 30, 1912 – dec 4, 1945)

Description:

During this time, influential leaders and the public began to believe that Japan had a mission to protect and civilize "backward" Asian nations and that the Japanese military was invincible.

Japan economically expanded, experimented with representative government, and was a growing presence in world politics.

There were also problems in the Taisho years. Economic development worked to the advantage of some urban residents while many rural people struggled.

During this time, the standard of living of average families doubled.

Life for many employees in large industrial concerns became good. Some male workers received the security of life time employment. Women factory workers in large companies and workers in small businesses were subject to low pay in good times and layoffs during bad times.

There was a rapid social change occuring in Japanese cities. Many young people were reading adventure and love story magazines, listening to radios, watching Western and Japanese movies, attending baseball games, listening to Jazz music, and wearing Western clothes.

Western politics also influenced politics during the Taisho years.
