Description:

Fidel Castro ruled Cuba for almost 5 decades as a one-party communist state.

Castro's influence extended beyond Cuba, as he became a prominent figure in the developing world. He supported communist and socialist developments in Angola, Ethiopia, Nicaragua and Guatemala etc. He gained support from the USSR and after the USSR dissolved Cuba lost a large amount of influence.

He remained in power for nearly five decades until ill health led him to transfer power to his brother Raúl Castro in 2008, and he passed away in 2016.
