Ottoman Empire loses WWI and is no longer an Empire --> League of Nations split apart lands and gives some lands to Britain & France

Turkey has a revolution
- overthrows Sultan
- new secular government: Republic of Turkey
- M. Kemel: first president of Turkey

M. Kemel
- known as Ataturk --> father of all Turks
- rapid modernization & westernization

Reforms under Ataturk:
- separates Islam from the government
- prohibits traditional clothing
- abolished polygamy (practice of marrying multiple spouses at the same time- ex. multiple wives or husbands at one time)
- created a secular court
- used metric weights & measures
- adopted the Roman alphabet
