Market crashed because of
- isolationist trade practices such as high import tariffs (high taxes on goods being imported from other countries)
- loans to European countries for paying off war debt
- prosperity

Political extremism: bonus army (war veterans) rioted for more pay, Father Coughlin, "Kingfish" Long, Joe Kennedy

- financial help to businesses/farms
- public $ spent on welfare/relief programs
- regulated stock market & banking system
