The greatest military operation in history, Operation Barbarossa began on June 22, 1941, when Nazi Germany launched a massive invasion of the Soviet Union. The operation started out quickly but ultimately failed because of strong Soviet resistance, logistical difficulties, and the severe winter. The mission's goals were to defeat the Soviet Union, secure its enormous resources, and establish German Lebensraum. This disaster was a major turning point in the Second World War, resulting in heavy losses for Germany and helping to bring about the ultimate downfall of Nazi Germany.
