Battle of the Somme (jul 1, 1916 – nov 18, 1916)
Description:
A joint operation between British and French forces intended to achieve a decisive victory over the Germans on the Western Front after 18 months of trench deadlock. One of the largest battles during World War I. It resulted in over one million casualties and is known for its heavy use of trench warfare. The Allied victory at the Somme inflicted serious damage on German positions in France, spurring the Germans to strategically retreat to the Hindenburg Line rather than continue battling over the same land.
