Description:

To establish a place for formerly enslaved people in American society, northern forces sent armies of occupation to the southern states and forced them to undergo a program of social and political reconstruction. Extended civil rights to formerly enslaved people and legislated that black men would be able to vote. Black and white citizens in southern states elected biracial governments for the first time in U.S history, and formerly enslaved people began to participate actively in the political affairs of the republic
