Intifada (dec 8, 1987 – sep 13, 1993)

Description:

Palestinian civilians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip wanted independence from Israel. They had no say in government despite paying taxes, could only have limited types of job, were denied basic human rights and were subject to military arrests.

It was mainly protests, strikes and stone throwing, but Israel responded with an 'Iron Fist' policy.

As a result, many Palestinians were killed but the USA began dialogue with the PLO. There was international sympathy for the Palestinians, and unity. Both the Palestinian and Israeli economies were damaged.

Some Israelis were shocked and wanted peace, while others wanted stronger measures for protection.

Hamas formed in Gaza as a result, while Arafat announced that the PLO was renouncing terrorism.
