Sennacherib's campaign in the Levant in 701 BCE aimed to reassert Assyrian control after a rebellion against Assyrian rule in 705 BCE. The rebellion involved various states, including Sidon and Ashkelon, which were forcibly taken, while others like Byblos, Ashdod, Ammon, Moab, and Edom submitted to Assyrian tribute. Hezekiah of Judah, influenced by Egypt, joined the rebellion, leading to an Assyrian invasion that captured many cities. Although Hezekiah was trapped in Jerusalem, the city was not taken, and he remained as an Assyrian vassal after paying tribute. In the aftermath, smaller states like Ekron were reinstated as Assyrian vassals after attempting to resist with Egyptian aid.
