Qing rule a centralized empire
- Things were good
- They had gunpowder weapons
- Confucian Bureaucracy
- Able to keep Europeans out
- European merchants have to get permission to trade in a port
- Strong economy
- Balance of trade in China's favor
- Europe has few trade items for China
- Chinese production based on small artisan shops (don't need machines because China has so many artisans)
