Era of the Trubadors (jan 1, 1085 – jan 1, 1270)
Description:
Hailing From occitania, now southern france, the troubadours were secular musicians and poets primarily employed for the entertainment and benefit of local lords.
Heavily associated with courtly love, the troubadours give us our first record of non-religious notated music.
While the troubadour tradition existed between the 11th and 13th century, its peak was definitely in the middle of those two periods. (hmmm, interesting overlap with the era when bernart de ventadorn is active)
