Kamakura Period (oct 30, 1185 – oct 30, 1333)

Description:

This period marks the governance by the Kamakura shogunate. During this time, the basis of feaudalism was firmly established.

The warrior class was the backbone of Japanese feudalism. A warrior's obedience to a superior was expected regardless of family, all private interests, and life itself.

Buddhism evolved into a widespread belief system throughout Japan during the Kamakura years.

By this time, Japan and China engaged in an officially condoned and quite lively trade. Chinese imports included silk, perfumes, sandalwood, porcelain, and copper coins. Japanese swords, fans, and lacquerware were highly prized in China.
