Hungarian Refugees (oct 1, 1956 – jan 1, 1957)

Description:

Summary: Many Hungarians found it difficult to live under communist authority following World War II. A revolution headed by unhappy Hungarians occurred in October 1956. There were only 12 days in the revolution. After invading the nation, the Soviet Army put an end to the revolution. For many Hungarians, leaving the nation was their only option to avoid persecution and punishment. Soon after the revolution ended, Hungarian immigrants started arriving in Canada. Between 1956 and the end of 1957, almost 30,000 Hungarians left their country in a catastrophic evacuation. This was the highest Hungarian immigrant population that Canada had ever seen. The majority of these immigrants were young men who had received industrial training or a solid education.
