Komagata Maru Incident (may 23, 1914 – jul 23, 1914)

Description:

Summary: The steamer Komagata Maru sailed into Vancouver's inlet of Burrard on May 23, 1914. There were 376 people on board, the majority of whom were from the Indian province of Punjab: 340 Sikhs, 24 Muslims, and 12 Hindus. They came to Canada with the hopes of finding a life of opportunity.

They were refused entry into Canada due to discriminatory and racist policies, even though they were British subjects. The passengers were compelled to stay on board without enough food, water, or medical assistance. Others were killed, as they were labelled political agitators.

On July 23, 1914, the ship was told to turn around after two months of living in dangerous and worsening conditions; the passengers were compelled to return to India. Sadly, 19 of the passengers were shot and died on their way back.
Push and Pull factors:
Push- War in their countries and coming to canada to be a refugee and have a better life.

Quality of life factors: This connects to the such quality of life factors because... Physical, this affects the physical standard of living because not allowing the people on the ships to get off caused illness. This ilness was caused due to lack of food, water, and not enough nutrients to sustain themselves so overtime when they got send back people either died to starvation or got horibble disease causing them to die on their journey back to India.
Political-many were punished for no reason and jailed and killed for speaking out causing their right ands freedoms to be lost and affecting this quality of life factor.
