Ashoka the Great was an emperor for the Mauryan dynasty. Towards the beginning of his rule, he expanded using cruel military tactics. During this time, Ashoka led a war against Kalinga. Ashoka won the war, however 300,000 people died. After the war, Ashoka turned his focus away from military expansion and focused on peace inside India.During this time of peace, Ashoka had his ideas about religious freedom & tolerance, helping the weak & elderly, establishing medical facilities, and planting fruit trees along the road all carved into stone and placed throughout his empire.
