Description:

August 21, 1791 – January 1, 1804 Haitian Revolution.Was a successful slave uprising against French colonial rule. Led by figures such as Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the enslaved population fought for their freedom and independence. In 1804, Haiti declared itself an independent republic, becoming the first post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world. Prior to its independence, Haiti was a French colony known as St. Domingue.
